Soundproofing with Mineral wool fiber products have a higher melt point than glass fiber products, offering extra fire protection in commercial and high-rise buildings. Sound attenuation fire blankets have high density to reduce noise. Stud blankets go into cavities of metal-stud or wood-stud walls, insulated exterior wall furring applications and curtain walls. Z-Furring Blankets are for use with USG Z-Furring channels in exterior applications. Fire Safety FS25 Blankets give additional fire protection.
With Thermafiber/ Rockwool mineral wool insulation curtain wall Insulation, spandrels panels of all materials become fire barriers with excellent fire-containment and thermal values. This insulation, made of non-corrosive mineral fiber, is especially suitable for aluminum, structural glass and porcelainized metal - prefabricated or field assembled. It's designed for quick mechanical attachment in exterior column covers and window and track fillers. In addition to the regular type, Thermafiber Dark Curtain wall Insulation is available for structural glass spandrels. Because it provides dark color and obscured surface texture, it's ideal for the fast-growing segment of curtain wall installations that use vision spandrel glass.
Superior Sound Attenuation Ratings have improved by as much as 11 points
in some cases when they are installed in stud cavities. These
blankets are also
effective in reducing low-frequency sound levels from machinery, mechanical
equipment and
music. Features include:
— Higher efficiency attenuation than with glass fiber insulation. A test
conducted by USG
showed the following performance: A 3-5/8 steel-framed wall with 5/8 gypsum
panels
on both sides tested as STC 40 (no insulation); with 3-1/2 glass fiber
insulation in the
stud cavity, performance improved to STC 47; with 3 THERMAFIBER SAFBs instead,
performance
was STC 49. The same system with 3 Creased THERMAFIBER SAFBs yielded an
STC 51.
— High density mineral wool insulation provides high-performance attenuation at medium and
high
frequencies—critical frequencies when speech is the principal sound source (such
as in offices).

Mass loaded vinyl is a specialty developed layer product offering superior soundproofing. Mass Damper sheet offers STC Ratings up to 53, It is a low cost material used for a variety of marine and land based building room soundproofing. The drawings below shows ML Vinyl installed as a suspended Mass barrier. This typical application would improve transmission loss between adjoining room spaces "Residential mass barrier". The combination of the damping and stiffness properties of Mass gives it excellent performance as a combined layer and damper when applied to partition panels and lightweight structural bulkheads, reducing room transmission of both airborne and structure Borne noise attenuation. Application direct to panels is best done with pre-applied pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backed up by minimal fasteners or staples.
